I waited for Detective Tyler and the other detectives up the street away from Opalette’s body, but I could still see her. Despite it being late, music blared from inside the Iron Horse Saloon.

In the distance, sirens shrilled through the night, seeking their way to Opalette.

The back door of the Iron Horse saloon opened, three women in tight leather pants and red bustiers stumbled out.

“We have to hurry before the cops get here,” one woman said.

“I thought Our Beloved said he would get rid of the body,” another woman spoke in a high-pitched voice. “What happened to his servant?”

“What are we going to do?” The third woman looked up and down the street. I leaned back, staying in the shadows. I removed my wand.

“We can’t do anything now. The cops are close. He will pay for this carelessness. Our Beloved will see to that. She clapped her hands up and said strange-sounding words.

A thick fog snaked its way through the alley. “Hurry, my sisters.”

I gripped my wand. If I followed them, then it would possibly lead me to Opalette’s killer. Or to Adam Clover, the Blood Collector.

The fog was thick, and I could barely see them. Boot heels clicked on the paved street.

The sirens came closer. Blue and red lights glowed through the pea soup thick mist. I removed my wand from my sleeve.

I almost stepped out of the shadows to follow the women, but something gripped my shoulder. “Don’t.”
